Dulles Metrorail Project Overview

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) is constructing a 23-mile extension of the existing Metrorail system, which will be operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority from East Falls Church to Washington Dulles International Airport west to Ashburn.

The extension will provide a direct connection via passenger rail from Dulles International Airport to downtown Washington DC.

Phase 1 and 2
The project will include 11 new stations. It will be built in two phases. Phase 1 is complete and Phase 2 id scheduled for completion early 2014..

Phase 2 will run from Wiehle Avenue to Ashburn in eastern Loudoun County. The extension will serve Reston Town Center, Herndon, Dulles Airport, Route 606 and Ashburn.  Service to Reston Town Center will be operational in February 2014.

The purpose of Dulles Metrorail is to provide high-quality, high-capacity transit service in the Dulles Corridor. New Metrorail service in the corridor will result in travel time savings between the corridor and downtown D.C., expand the reach of the existing regional rail system, offer a viable alternative to automobile travel and support future transit-oriented development along the corridor.

At the Northern Virginia BrewFest more than 40 breweries will feature their best American style beers. The beer festival highlights the intricacies of each particular beer, how beer is made and how to brew your own. Local restaurants provide foods that compliment beer such as chicken wings, chili, barbeque, and many other summer treats. Entertainment includes live music and children’s activities such as face painting, air-brush tattooing, moon bounces, and rock climbing.

The Northern Virginia Summer BrewFest has been held for several years in June at Morven Park in Leesburg. In 2013, for the first time, a Fall Brewfest will be held in October in Centreville.

Solar Impulse lands at Dulles International Airport

(Reuters) - An airplane entirely powered by the sun landed in Washington on Sunday after a flight from St. Louis, the next-to-last leg of a journey across the United States intended to boost support for clean energy technologies.

The Solar Impulse landed at Dulles International Airport outside Washington at 12:15 a.m. EDT, organizers said in a statement. It will remain in the U.S. capital until it takes off for New York in early July for the last leg of its historic trip.

If the spindly experimental aircraft completes the journey as planned, it will be the first solar-powered plane capable of operating day and night to fly across the United States.

"It proves the reliability and potential of clean technologies, and this is crucial in pushing our message forward," Swiss pilot Bertrand Piccard said in the statement. Piccard founded the Solar Impulse project with fellow pilot Andre Borschberg.

With the wingspan of a jumbo jet and the weight of a small car, the Solar Impulse is a test model for a more advanced aircraft the team plans to build to fly around the world in 2015.

The plane completed the first leg of the journey from San Francisco to Phoenix in early May and flew later that month from Phoenix to Dallas.

In early June, the Solar Impulse made the trip from Dallas to St. Louis. It flew to Washington in nearly 30 hours of flying over two days.

The project began in 2003 with a 10-year budget of 90 million euros ($112 million). It has involved engineers from Swiss escalator maker Schindler and research aid from Belgian chemicals group Solvay.

The plane made its first intercontinental flight, from Spain to Morocco, in June 2012.

The aircraft is propelled by energy collected from 12,000 solar cells in its wings that simultaneously recharge batteries for night use.

Virginia has a variety of places to see 4th of July fireworks. You can see spectacular views of the fireworks on the National Mall from the Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima) in Arlington, Virginia near the Rosslyn Metro station and areas along the Virginia side of the Potomac River that can be reached from George Washington Memorial Parkway. You may park at the Gravelly Point parking lot, which is about a quarter mile from the 14th Street Bridge. Another great place to watch the fireworks is from the Air Force Memorial on Columbia Pike. An all day festival will be held atLong Bridge Park in Arlington providing an ideal location to view the National Mall fireworks.

The Sesquicentennial of the Civil War

 Fairfax County, Virgina - the hub of Civil War history. 

In Fairfax County in the year 1863, there wasn't a soul in the city or countryside who didn't know the name John Singleton Mosby. Also known as "The Gray Ghost", Mosby was a small-town lawyer, turned ingenious Confederate citizen soldier who struck fear in the hearts of his Union counterparts. Mosby first enlisted after Virginia seceded from the Union as a member of the 1st Virginia Cavalry. His study of military history led him to believe that a small number of men staying at safe houses over a large rural area could launch devastating surprise attacks by day or night that would weaken the enemy's morale and tie up troops that would otherwise threaten the main Confederate forces. He was right. And the raids he led became the stuff of legend. The 150th anniversary commemorations of two of his famous raids will take place this March: Mosby's Fairfax Raid, March 9th. The early morning capture of Union General Edwin Stoughton, 18 armed men and several horses—without firing a single shot—is Mosby's most storied achievement. Mosby's Raid on Herndon Station, March 17th. The Saint Patrick's Day skirmish will take place once again as reenactors capture 25 members of the 1st Vermont Cavalry. After the war, Mosby moved on, befriending President Grant and working for Uncle Sam. But his service to the south is still legend in Northern Virginia.
